Jewell Harrison was born on December 26, 1938 in East Bernstadt, Kentucky to Mark and Christine Gumm and she left her earthly home on August 1, 2020 in Daytona Beach, FL. She was the youngest of three children and she was a life-long resident of Southeast Kentucky. She married her husband Bill Harrison in October 1960 and she gave birth to Delaine, their only child, in 1962. Jewell was an employee of the Micro Devices/Thermodisc electronics factory for over 25 years before her retirement in 2003. She was a member of the East Bernstadt United Methodist Church and she attended the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in East Bernstadt for many years.
An avid Wildcat fan, Jewell followed her University of Kentucky basketball team for many years and she created scrapbooks with news clippings and trading cards. She also enjoyed quilting, and there are multiple generations of friends and family members who keep her creations as treasured heirlooms. She had a quick wit and an excellent sense of humor that left people either cracking up or completely speechless depending on whether they were in on the joke.
Jewell was preceded in death by her parents Mark and Cristine Gumm, and by her siblings, which include her brother, Eugene Gumm, and her sister, Wilma Bailey. She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Bill Harrison, and by her daughter, Delaine Hobson and her husband Keith Hobson, and by her grandsons Will Hobson and Jordan Hobson. She is also survived by several generations of nieces and nephews whom she happily doted on with birthday cards and Christmas presents.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a jewel is defined as “a very valued or treasured person” and can be further described as “very fine example.” My grandmother was the embodiment of this description and she served as a very fine example with her love and kindness toward others. Jewell Harrison was a jewel to all who knew her. She certainly made all of our lives better. We love you and we miss you.
